In life, we occasionally have an opportunity to recognize a quality in others that is only too rare. The spirit of a pioneer shines in the souls of those few people who laugh in the face of controversy or peril. History has recorded some of the memorable accomplishments of classic examples of a pioneer spirit... men who held a single-minded focus and unwavering devotion to a cause, vision or challenge.
Christopher Columbus certainly qualifies as having a pioneering spirit. And who can forget the tales of Lewis and Clark: leaders of an expedition appointed by President Thomas Jefferson to explore the West in hopes of finding a navigable water route to the Pacific Ocean. Their 3-year journey did not discover a continuous waterway from East to West, but their team's commitment and perseverance did return having compiled a detailed map for regions West of the Mississippi.
Or, how about a guy like Jacque Cousteau: naval officer, scientist, ecologist, underwater explorer, and co-inventor of the self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA)... It is safe to say he had the pioneer spirit.
However, the qualities of a pioneer spirit are not limited to great explorers of the unknown worlds before them. A pioneer spirit is also required by someone who just wants to stand up and be heard... shouting the virtues of righting a wrong... simply telling anyone who will listen that an injustice needs a review and correction.
This type of pioneer spirit was possessed by men like Martin Luther King, who proclaimed to a Nation that every man disserved to dream. And Samuel Adams, one of our country's founding fathers, who defiantly held the belief that taxation should only occur with representation. Good ol' Sam was a persistent thorn in the nether regions of England's posterior... a real trouble-maker and instigator of the American Revolution.
So what types of qualities are required to go down in history as a real pioneer? What do the gentlemen above - and countless others like them - all have in common?
Well, for one, they are all dead... but more importantly, they were each guided by a strong spirit for honor, duty, and right vs. wrong.
Today, we have honorable people in our presence who also share a similar sense of duty. One such person I have come to know is Mike Adams, also known as the Health Ranger.
Mike is founder of NewsTarget.com and author of several books, including "Natural Health Solutions". I was fortunate to have a chance to meet Mike during a seminar in which he was speaking about his book, and I have come to know Mike as a very honorable man, strong in convictions, steadfast in his disciplines and beliefs of what is right and wrong. This is just the kind of guy I like to know.
In a world where so many people are only out for themselves, it is refreshing to know someone else genuinely cares and believes in his stated principles. Mike is this type of person.
Newstarget.com is an informative web site for topics pertaining to natural health, environmental responsibility, and inappropriate government intervention in your freedom to make informed choices. If you have a chance to peruse the web site (which I hope you make an effort to do) and you find yourself overwhelmed, confused, or merely disbelieving, I highly recommend you read Natural Health Solutions.
You might be surprised to learn that in this wonderful country of ours, we do not always enjoy the Right for Freedom of Speech. I know, I know... I was shocked to learn this, too. But it is true. In our industry, there are restrictions for what we are allowed to say about your health and certain truths about nutritional supplements. Sometimes, it can be a bit frustrating to sit here biting my tongue - with so much absurdity swirling around me - unable to speak my mind. There are some topics in which the only statement I can proclaim is, "How Stupid Are We?!?"
But in Mike's case, since he does not derive an income from any source for the sale of nutritional supplements, he is not limited by such restrictions. So, this makes for some very lively discussions and statements about the government and the drug/medical industry. There are a lot of "interests" who may not like what he has to say, and some of those powerful interests may wish he disappeared (whether figuratively or physically), but he is legally able to speak the truth, as he knows it.
Natural Health Solutions mentions several historic events that illustrate the adversarial relationship between the natural health industry and the FDA. I might warn you... the first half of the book can cause the hair on the back of your neck to stand up and your pulse to increase, so I don't suggest using the book for light reading before bed. However, if you are serious about protecting your rights for freedom of choice in caring for your health, and you want to arm yourself with more information than just what is spoon fed by special interests in the national media, you will find Mike's book interesting.
I, for one, am grateful for the pioneering spirit displayed by Mike Adams. He is walking in the footsteps of other driven and honorable men, and I am proud to say I know him.
Lewis and Clark would be proud, as well.
Bill Evans
