You should drink about 8-9 glasses of water a day, while drinking additional water after drinking coffee or another caffeinated beverage, during exercise, and while suffering from diarrhea.
We lose large amounts of water during normal daily activities. In fact, about 2500 mL per day of water is lost through sweat, breathing, urine, and bowel movements. Physical exertion further increases the amount of water lost through sweat and breathing. Diarrhea further increases water lost in feces, and diuretics like caffeine increase the amount of water lost through urine.
To offset this water loss, all people should drink about a half-ounce of water per every pound of body weight. For every cup of coffee or caffeinated drink, one glass of water should be added. People who exercise need to drink more water than sedentary individuals.
