When might I need a low-fiber diet?

A low-fiber diet may be useful as a doctor-prescribed short-term solution for intestinal pain and inflammation.

We’ve learned that fiber plays an extremely important role in gastrointestinal health. But certain diseases or events may require a low-fiber diet to reduce pain and inflammation. These events include inflammatory bowel pain, intestinal lesions, and surgery or colostomy.

Low-fiber diets essentially work by avoiding the problem, rather than healing it. This should only be used as a short-term solution for pain and discomfort. Patients should never approach the low-fiber diet as a long-term remedy.
