Which nutrients
may be useful for osteoporosis?
Women at risk for
osteoporosis should consume plenty of calcium, vitamin D, magnesium, folic acid,
and B-complex vitamins.
The
single most important method toward osteoporosis prevention is supplementation
with calcium and vitamin D throughout life, especially during and after menopause.
Calcium keeps bones strong, while vitamin D is needed for the absorption of
calcium. Magnesium is also helpful for utilization of calcium. Folic acid
helps to prevent osteoporosis by reducing levels of homocysteine, which may
have a negative impact on calcium absorption and use. Also, the B complex vitamins
and zinc work together to promote bone growth and repair.
While
estrogenic herbs may theoretically decrease bone loss, scientific or clinical
studies have not yet validated this use.
