Are you one of the many Americans who were unable to resist the trendy consumption of cereal and soda during 2007?

Though soda sales dropped by 1% last year, they reigned as the most commonly purchased packaged good in 2007. Amid obesity and health concerns, approximate soda sales topped $18 billion for the year. Our busy schedules helped to bring ready-to-eat cereal into fourth place, as 92% ($7.7 billion) of Americans purchased cereal last year.

A few honorary mentions include chocolate (8th place - 91% of households) and potato chips (9th place - 88% of households).

We all need a little guilty-pleasure (quite sparingly), but when these pleasures take over the kitchen cupboards and fresh fruit is replaced with bottled fizz, you know you must repent.

Love your liver – Why do you treat me so bad?

As the second largest organ in the body (4lbs worth), the liver takes a beating from the external environment (air we breathe, etc.) to internal consumption (unhealthy eating habits, prescription drugs, alcohol, etc.)

Many Crucial Roles: The liver is involved in several body functions: metabolizing, detoxifying, and regenerating. Important hormones, including adrenaline, estrogen, insulin, aldosterone, and thyroid hormones (T3 and T4), are regulated by the liver.

Improper liver function: can lead to hormonal imbalances (hypothyroidism, etc.) and cardiovascular disorders (high cholesterol/high blood pressure, etc). Unhealthy eating habits can become the source of digestive disorders (Cirhossis, IBS, Liver Cancer, etc.) and fat accumulation. An overworked liver cannot perform its proper metabolizing and detoxifying functions; thus, it releases toxins into the body leading to many health disturbances (obesity, poor immunity, allergies, chronic fatigue syndrome, etc.).

TLC – Tender Liver Care

It’s time to cleanse out the damage done by a year of cereal and soda consumption. Here are a few suggestions.

Bare Necessities:

* Drink plenty of purified water: 8 to 12 glasses per day (add lemon for a detox boost).
* Eat Beans and Greens: High fiber sources packed with vitamins and minerals.
* Eat Complex Carbohydrates: brown rice, barley, oats, etc.
* Plenty of Organic Fruits & Veggies: apples, beet roots, radishes, garlic, celery, etc.
* Nuts & Seeds (avoid peanuts): almonds, sesame seeds, etc.
* Avoid Refined Foods: Soft Drinks, Simple Carbohydrates (White Flour, Sugar, etc.), Partially Hydrogenated Fats, Processed Foods/Snacks, excessive protein, and excessive alcohol.

Supplemental Supplies

* Vitamin B-Complex – benefits the liver by metabolizing carbohydrates and fats, supporting digestive and nervous system function, and increasing red blood cell production.
* Folic Acid – used by the liver to decrease oxidative stress that is harmful to the heart.
* Vitamin C – As a powerful antioxidant, vitamin C boosts immunity and neutralizes toxic substances.
* Co-Enzyme Q10 – Protective antioxidant that supplies oxygen to the liver.
