Ergotamine (Ergostat)
Rizatriptan (Maxalt)
Sumatriptan (Imitrex)
Zolmitriptan (Zomig)
Nutritional Considerations:
Avoid caffeine. (McKevoy 1998)
Limit smoking. (AMA, 1998)
Limit alcohol use, which can aggravate drug side effects. (Scott 1994)
Herbal Considerations:
Avoid St. John's Wort. (Franklin 1999) (Pronsky 1999)
Black tea, cola nut, guarana, green tea, and mate can all increase the GI absorption of ergotamine. (McKevoy 1998)
The herb Ginkgo Biloba may affect the central nervous system and should not be used in combination with the above drugs. (Newall 1996)
