Prostate Medications

Finasteride (Proscar, Propecia)

Nutritional Considerations:

Avoid caffeine, alcohol and spicy foods. (Germano 1995)

Zinc, selenium, and the amino acids (glutamic acid, alanine and glycine) may be beneficial. Ask your pharmacist regarding necessary supplementation. (Dumrau 1962) (Schrodt 1964) (Webber 1985)

Herbal Considerations:

African pygeum and saw palmetto have hormonal activity and may have additive effects on proscar. Consult your pharmacist concerning the safety of taking these herbs with the drug. (Bassi 1987)(Carilla 1984)

Herbs with steroid components e.g. Sarsaparilla may increase side effects of finasteride and must not be taken together. (Newall 1996)

Avoid cernilton (an herbal product made from rye grass pollen) with Propecia, (same as Proscar) , without consulting a pharmacist. There may be additive effects. (Habid 1990) (Horii 1985) (Suzuki 1992)
