Anethole is a volatile oil found in anise and other plants. In anise it forms 75-90% of the oil. Oil of anise (of which the major component is anethole), when ingested, helps expel gases from the intestine, promotes secretion from the mucous membrane of the air passages, and facilitates its expulsion. Anethole has also caused inflammation of the skin in some individuals.
