Iodine-Iodide Complex

Description
Iodine-Iodide Complex is a beneficial combination of Iodine and Potassium Iodide. Iodine is an essential trace element that is crucial to normal thyroid function. Sources include sea vegetables, fish, meats, and iodized salts. Potassium Iodide is a mineral compound that is also essential to thyroid function. It is also found in iodized salt.

Overview

How well do you know your thyroid? The thyroid gland affects every tissue, organ and cell in the body. Its widespread influence includes temperature and hormone regulation, sustained energy, cognitive function, and heart health. When nutrients are in short supply, the thyroid is unable to function properly. Iodine-Iodide Complex is a combination of Iodine, an essential trace element, and Potassium Iodide, a mineral compound. This combination provides vital nutrition for sustained thyroid health.

Research

Iodine

Iodine is a main component in healthy thyroid function by supporting the production of the thyroid’s T3 and T4 hormones. These hormones are involved in the proper function of several body systems.1  Low levels of iodine can affect thyroid hormones leading to degenerative ailments. Researchers found iodine protects the health of women’s mammary glands by optimizing thyroid hormone function.2

Women require an increased production of thyroid hormone during pregnancy that depends on iodine availability. Low levels of T4 can effect the cognitive development of the fetus and lead to cognitive dysfunction. The American Thyroid Association recommends that women take 150 mcg/day of iodine during pregnancy and lactation.3  Researchers also state 200 to 250 mcg/day of iodine can ensure normal thyroid levels for women during pregnancy.4

High-intensity athletes that lose electrolytes through profuse sweating may have iodine deficiencies. One hundred sedentary high school students and 13 male soccer-team players were recruited to evaluate iodine deficiency through perspiration. Results indicated that 46% of soccer players had low iodine levels, in comparison to 1% of the sedentary students.5

Potassium Iodide

Potassium iodide is a naturally occurring chemical element that the body uses to make thyroid hormones. It is often added to table salt and known as “iodized salt”. Various food sources, including sea vegetables, fish, meats, and iodized salt.

Potassium iodide can help balance overactive thyroid function. Researchers gave 89 patients with high T4 hormone levels potassium iodide, while 24 patients took a placebo. They found that T4 levels significantly decreased and TSH levels significantly increased in patients taking potassium iodide to help balance thyroid function.6

Furthermore, potassium iodide has been used to protect the thyroid gland from exposure to radioactive iodine. One study found that administering potassium iodide up to 48 hours before or 8 hours after exposure to radiation protected the thyroid from radioactive elements.7  While potassium iodide is contained in iodized salt, the amount is not enough to protect against exposure to radioactive iodine.

Researchers divided 304 children (7 to 13 years old) with an iodine deficiency into five groups to determine the effects of potassium iodide. After a 13-month review, it was observed that children taking potassium iodide had a decrease in iodine deficiency.8
