Dieing to Lose Weight

I see our friends across the pond are up to their old tricks.

What's it been, now... maybe a few years, or so, that the Chinese were busted lacing pet food and baby formula with melamine?

That stuff is terrific when used to make pretty white shelves and cabinets... but much less than terrific when blending it into a food supply.  Unless, of course, the goal is to poison something... then melamine is great!

And wasn't it a year before that when they were caught blending diethylene glycol into toothpaste to give it a rich, creamy texture?  What a superb idea.  After all, diethylene glycol works awesome as a solvent in brake fluid, engine lubricants and antifreeze, so why not scrub your teeth with it... except for the fact that it will kill you.

Then, just last year, I referred to a period of recalls by the FDA as, "Recall the Grin in 2010".

I wrote a short article, last year, after the FDA released a third round of product recalls that listed "not-so-natural-Natural Supplements" that were found to be laced with a pharmaceutical drug.

The products were all within the category of "Male Performance" formulas, in which the ingredients originated in China. I am sure it was just an "absent-minded mistake" (yeah, let's call it that) that these supposed natural formulas were found to contain Sulfoaildenafil, which is an analogue of Sildenafil.

Now, far be it from me to agree with the FDA on everything they do... but sometimes, they get it right.  Sildenafil can be dangerous for some people. There is a good reason why it should be used only with prescription.  What makes it even more dangerous is when someone does not realize it is in a product they are taking.

[Editors Note: Sildenafil is Viagra.  I will repeat a partial list of the names for the recalled products at the bottom of this newsletter.  Some of the names of these products are quite creative... certainly rated PG13... but still, curiously clever.]

So, here we are now near the end of 2011, and it might be shaping up to be the year of drug-laced, weight loss supplements.

Today, the FDA released a list of nutritional products, in the weight loss category, that are all found to contain the drug "Sibutramine". 

Sibutramine hydrochloride monohydrate used to be called Meridia, before it was outlawed.  It was administered as a treatment for obesity. Unfortunately, it was deadly.  That's a tough way to lose weight.

Would anyone care to take a wild guess from what country the formulas have originated?

Anyone...?

There may be additional FDA notices released in the coming days or months on this topic, but for now, just help spread the word about these specific items.  If you have any of these products on your shelf, please follow the instructions for return.

Believe it or not, we still have folks that question why we don't import our products from China.  Sure, it costs us more to source ingredients elsewhere -- a lot more -- but, at least I don't lay awake at night wondering if I am going to kill anyone because I was trying to increase our margins, or clueless about the contents of our products.
