Peppermint and caraway oils may effectively reduce the symptoms of dyspepsia, according to this study conducted on 96 out-patients with functional dyspepsia. For 28 days, one group of patients received placebo and the other group received one capsule of peppermint/caraway oil (90mg peppermint oil and 50mg caraway oil) twice daily. After this period, 67% of the peppermint/caraway oil group reported a significant overall improvement, compared to 21% of the placebo group. The intensity of pain and feelings of fullness/pressure were also reduced by more than 40% in the supplemented group (about 20% for placebo). The peppermint/caraway combination was well tolerated among participants.

Supplementing with peppermint oil may reduce the severity of pain associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), according to this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Participants (42 children with IBS) received either placebo or pH-dependent peppermint oil capsules for two weeks. After the study, 75% of the peppermint oil group exhibited reductions in the severity of IBS pain.
