Excessive Bleeding
Excessive Bleeding
Saw Palmetto may cause excessive bleeding in patients undergoing operation, according to this case review. This case involved a man who suffered severe intraoperative hemorrhage and then prolonged post-operative bleeding that subsided when he stopped taking the herb. The complications that occurred in this case should remind physicians of the importance of knowing about their patients' use of dietary supplements before treating them.

Urinary Tract Symptoms & Saw Palmetto
Urinary tract symptoms
Saw palmetto may improve the lower urinary tract symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia, according to this double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. All of the trial participants had an International Prostate Symptom Score of 8 or higher and were all over the age of 45. After receiving a placebo supplement for one month, 85 men were randomized to receive either saw palmetto or placebo for six months. After evaluating each participant's International Prostate Symptom Score, sexual function questionnaire, and urinary flow rate, it was determined that the saw palmetto group showed significant symptom improvement over the placebo group.
No significant improvement in sexual function or urinary flow rate was found in either group. Although a significant improvement in lower urinary tract symptoms was seen, no mechanism for saw palmetto's action has been elucidated.
