CHAMOMILE (Chamaemelum nobile; Matricaria chamomilla/recutita)
Family: Compositae (daisy)
Source: The Essential oil is obtained from the Flowers.
Fragrance:: Apple-like, musty.
Volatility: Middle note.
General description and habitat:
Many species, all having finely divided leaves and daisy-like flowers. The sweet variety (Chamaemelum nobile) reaches a height of up to 15-23 cm and flowers between June and August, whereas the wild variety (Matricaria chamomilla) can reach up to 1 meter and flowers from May to August.
Principal constituents: Azulene which is formed during distillation.
History
History and folk use:
The ancient Egyptians venerated this plant. Hippocrates dedicated it to the sun because it cured agues.
It was established in monastery and domestic herb gardens by the seventeenth century for medicinal and beauty purposes. The Pilgrim Fathers took it with them to the New World. In 1656 the herbalist Parkinson advised using it when bathing.
Chamomile oil was used up to the Second World War as a disinfectant and antiseptic in hospitals.
