CYPRESS (Cupressus sempervirens)
Family: Conifer
Source: The Essential oil is obtained from the Leaves and cones.
Fragrance:: Woody, balsamic, amber.
Volatility: Middle note.
General description and habitat:
A columnar evergreen conifer: height up to 45 meters; tiny leaves pressed against branches and twigs; female flowers produce round cones; native to Mediterranean Europe but now cultivated in temperate Europe and North America.
Principal constituents: D-pinene, terpinol, cedrol, d-camphene, cymene, tannin.
History
History and folk use:
Known to the ancient Egyptians, it was used as medicine and the sarcophagi were made from the wood. Pluto, the Greek god of the underworld, had the tree dedicated to him which is why there are cypresses grown in cemeteries. Its haemostatic properties were known to Hippocrates, Dioscorides and Galen.

Contraindications
Not to be used early in pregnancy, or with hypertensives.
