Description
FRANKINCENSE (Boswellia carteri)
Family: Burseraceae (resinous trees and shrubs)
Source: The Essential oil is obtained from the gum.
Fragrance:: Woody, spicy, lemony, camphor.
Volatility: Base note.
General description and habitat:
Small tree; height up to 20 feet; grown in the Middle East and Africa; related to the tree which produces myrrh.
Principal constituents: Ketonic alcohol, camphene, dipentene, pinene, phellandrene.
History
History and folk use:
Associated with religious ritual, it is best remembered as one of the gifts from the Three Wise Men to Jesus. The Phoenicians had a monopoly on its trade for a long time.
Dioscorides recommended the gum for treating skin disorders, hemorrhages and pneumonia, to name a few. A sixteenth century record shows that soldiers were treated with frankincense, and that it was good for breast abscesses.
Properties & Uses
General properties: Antiseptic, hemostatic, relaxing, sedative, warming.
