Family: Liliaceae.
Source: Red onion bulb.
Fragrance: Unpleasant.
General description and habitat:
Perennial herb, the essential oil is now produced primarily in France, Germany and Egypt.
Principal constituents:
Dipropyldisulfide, dipropyltrisulfide, methylpropyldisulfide.
History
History and folk use:
Known to the ancient Greeks, it was reputed to maintain clear skin. Also glandular imbalance.
Properties & Uses
General properties:
Anthelmintic, antimicrobial, antirheumatic, antiseptic, antisclerotic, antispasmodic, antiviral, bactericidal, carminative, depurative, digestive, diuretic, expectorant, fungicidal, hypocholesterolemic, hypoglycemic, hypotensive, stomachic, tonic and vermifuge.
Primary Use: Lymphatic drainage.
Contraindications
Generally non-toxic.
