Description
PATCHOULI (Pogostemon cablin)
Family: Labiatae (mint).
Source: The Essential oil is obtained from the leaves.
Fragrance: Earthy, penetrating, heavy.
Volatility: Base note.
General description and habitat:
Herbaceous shrub native to Malaysia but now grown in many places; height up to 3 feet; flowers in terminal spikes; harvested three times a year. Sumatra is the major producer, followed by China.
Principal constituents:
Patchoulol, sesqiterpenes, benzaldehyde, cinnamic aldehyde, eugenol.
History
History and folk use:
Traditional Chinese, Malay and Japanese medicine use it as a stimulant, stomachic and antiseptic. It was the principal remedy for snake bites. Arab doctors used if for fevers, epidemics, etc.

Antiseptic, antiviral, fungicidal, anti-inflammatory, relaxing, uplifting, stimulating, rejuvenating.
