Description
PETITGRAIN (Citrus aurantium bigaradia)
Family: Rutaceae
Source: Essential oil obtained from the leaves, twigs and tiny, unripe fruit (hence its name).
Fragrance:Sharp with hint of orange.
Volatility: Top note.
General description and habitat:
The sweet orange tree can grow up to a height of 30 feet; with large, dark, glossy-green leaves; white flowers
Principal constituents:
Geraniol, aeranyl acetate, limonene, linalool, linalyl acetate, sesquiterpene.
History
History and folk use:
Grasses in the south of France used to be the best source of high-quality oil. This oil was used for the best cosmetics and perfumes. The main producer, now, is Paraguay but the product is inferior and used mostly in perfumery and cosmetics. Other oil producing countries include southern Italy (Calabrian oil is good quality) and North Africa.
