Rose Essence

The Essential oil is obtained from the flowers. 5 tonnes of roses are needed to obtain 1 kg essential oil and so is very expensive.

Fragrance:Sweet, floral.

Volatility: Base note.

General description and habitat:

Grown in temperate climates worldwide; 250 different species but thousands of hybrids and varieties but only three are cultivated commercially: R. gallica, R. centifolia, R. damascena; the latter is highly perfumed and the most cultivated and has the most therapeutic value.

Principal constituents:

Eugenol, farnesol, geraniol or citronellol, linalool, nerol, nonylic aldehyde, rhodinol, stearoptene.

History

History and folk use:

The Greeks and the Romans highly valued the rose, scattering them from ceilings in banquets and adorning statues and featuring it in legends and myths. The ancient Greeks used roses in religious ceremonies and put them next to mummies in their tombs. Roses were introduced to Europe in the Middle Ages. Monastery gardens cultivated roses for medicinal purposes.

The French have been distilling roses since before the French Revolution for use mainly in rosewater. The oil was a by-product.
