The Essential oil is obtained from the flowers.
The first oil drawn off is the highest quality: Ylang-Ylang Extra. More commonly available and much less expensive, is Ylang-Ylang III.
Fragrance: Sweet, narcissus, hyacinth.
Volatility: Base note
General description and habitat:
Originating in the Philippines, these trees have now spread throughout tropical Asia. Branches droop like a willow, with large, oval, shiny leaves. The highly perfumed flowers occur in clusters, starting out green but turning yellow about 20 days later.
In recent years, production has been declining and inferior quality oils from other varieties are being substituted.
Principal constituents:
Pinene, benzoic acid, cadinene, caryophyllene, cresol, eugenol, isoeugenol ,linalyl acetate, linalyl benzoate, linalool, geraniol.
History
History and folk use:
The native Filipinos used the flowers to made a pomade which they would rub on their bodies to ward off fever in the rainy season. The islanders would mix the flowers with coconut oil to protect their hair from the salt water when swimming. It also kept the skin healthy and helped to counter insect and snake bites.
"Cananga oil" was used in nineteenth century Europe as a hair oil. It's therapeutic properties were discovered at the turn of nineteenth century.

Contraindications
Beware falsification with other oils.
High concentrations may cause headaches or nausea.
