SPEARMINT ( Mentha viridis)
Family: Labiatae / Lamiaceae.
Source: Flowery tops.
Fragrance: Mild mint.
General description and habitat:
Hardy, branched perennial herb. Native to the Mediterranean. Primarily produced, today, by the USA, Hungary and Spain. Russian sources use Mentha verticellata.
Principal constituents: Cineol, L-carvone, limonene, linalol, menthol, menthone, phellandrene, pinenes, pulegone.
History
History and folk use: Milder peppermint, especially pleasing to children.
Properties & Uses
General properties: Antiseptic, antispasmodic, calming, stomachic.
