Pear

Description

The pear is an edible, green colored, sweet fruit of the rosaceous tree, Pyrus communis, also called the pear tree and related to the apple tree. This fruit contains an abundance of fiber as well as lesser amounts of potassium and vitamin C.

Available year-round with peak supplies August through May.

Note: Pears should be clean, free from cuts or bruises, and firm to fairly firm. Fruit should display coloring characteristic of the particular variety and should not be wilted, shriveled or misshapen. Yielding to gentle pressure near the stem end and side surfaces indicates fruit is ready to eat. Scars or other minor blemishes usually do not affect eating quality. Russeting is a common characteristic among some of the best-flavored pears.
