Anthraquinone Glycoside
Anthraquinone glycosides are a class of compounds grouped together due to their similar chemical structures; they are derivatives of anthracene, quinones, and glycosides. These compounds may be found in senna, rhubarb, and other plants. Some anthraquinone glycosides, such as sennosides A and B, exhibit cathartic properties and are used in laxatives. Caution must be exercised when using sennosides because prolonged use may lead to the damage of the large intestines. Anthraquinone glycosides are absorbed into the bloodstream, and circulate through the body until they reach the appropriate nerve center, whereupon they stimulate the laxative effect.
