Eucalyptol
Eucalyptol (cineole) is a volatile oil found in eucalyptus, allspice, and many other plants. Eucalyptol is antibacterial and promotes secretion and expulsion of mucus from the mucous membranes in the air passages.
Eucalyptol is nonphototoxic, nonirritating, and nonsensitizing to the skin. It is used as an expectorant in cough and cold medications, and as an antiseptic. It is also used as a flavoring agent in food products.
