Description
Dumping syndrome results from food passing rapidly through the stomach and into the upper intestine.
Rapid gastric emptying of liquids is the hallmark of the dumping syndrome.
Causes
Most commonly due to surgical procedures e.g. gastrectomy (partial or total removal of the stomach). This interferes with normal digestion. Non-surgical cases might be caused by stress.
Signs & Symptoms
Symptoms may include: sweating, faintness and palpitations. This may mimic those of diabetics, since the glucose and insulin levels will be affected in similar ways.
Nutritional Supplements
Structure & Function: Intestinal Health
---------------------------------
General Supplements
---------------------------------
| Folic Acid | 400-1000 mcg |
| Guar Gum | 1-5 g |
* Please refer to the respective topic for specific nutrient amounts.
Note:
All amounts are in addition to those supplements having a Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA). Due to individual needs, one must always be aware of a possible undetermined effect when taking nutritional supplements. If any disturbances from the use of a particular supplement should occur, stop its use immediately and seek the care of a qualified health care professional.
Dietary Considerations
Patients who have undergone one of these surgical procedures should avoid large meals and refined carbohydrates. It may also be helpful to lie down after meals.
Supplementing meals with fiber (guar gum, pectin, or wheat bran) may delay emptying.
Folic acid supplementation may also prove to be beneficial.

Herbalists do not treat "dumping syndrome" per se. They do, however, have approaches to reduce inflammation and soothe the stomach.
Aloe vera juice can heal wounds.
Chamomile and Turmeric (curcumin) are known to reduce inflammation.
Marshmallow, Pau d'Arco, Peppermint or Slippery Elm, as herbal teas, are noted for their soothing properties.
