Description
It has been found some individuals are sodium sensitive and their blood pressure increases with increasing dietary sodium. For these individuals, a sodium restricted diet is recommended.
A Mild Sodium Restriction Diet provides 2,000 to 3,000 milligrams of sodium per day as contrasted to the 3,000 to 4,000 milligrams suggested by the Dietary Goals Diet. The Mild Sodium Restriction Diet is used to treat chronic liver failure with edema as well as congestive heart failure and the management of mild hypertension.
The Mild Sodium Restricted Diet is adequate for all nutrients except iron for females according to the RDA's. Salt substitutes containing potassium should not be used without consultation with a health practitioner.
If diuretics are used with a sodium restricted diet, potassium supplements might be required. Significant amounts of sodium may be found in local water supplies and chemically softened water and mineral water. The amount of sodium in the water should be taken into account when planning menus.
