Amphotericin B

See also Antifungal

Generic and Trade Names:

Amphotericin BAbelcet
Amphotec
Fungizone

Description:

Amphotericin B is a prescription drug classified as an antifungal, antimicrobial agent. Amphotericin B is used to treat certain systemic fungal infections.

The mode of action of the drug is theorized to be as follows: the drug binds to sterols in the cell membrane, which changes the membrane, and this change allows a variety of necessary smaller molecules to leak out of the organism. Amphotericin B should only be used in cases of potentially fatal fungal infections. It is not used as a routine antibiotic because it is highly toxic. (Facts and Comparisons 1999)

Nutritional Considerations:

Hydration: insure adequate fluid intake unless directed otherwise. (Pronsky 1999)

Electrolytes: there may be increased excretion of magnesium through urine while taking Amphoterecin B. It is not clear if supplementation is necessary (magnesium and potassium deficiencies). (Brinker 1998) (McClean 1994)(Pronsky 1999)

Herbal Considerations:

In an invitro study, garlic was shown to help Amphoterecin B's ability to kill a particular fungus (Cryptococcus neoformans). (Davis 1994)
