Description:
Anticholinergics form a class of drugs which block impulses of the parasympathetic nerves. These drugs have a variety of uses. They are used to alleviate parkinsonian symptoms, they inhibit central cholinergic action and may also inhibit the reuptake of dopamine in the brain. They are also used in combination for gastrointestinal spasms,etc. The anticholinergic drugs include the belladonna alkaloids like, atropine, scopolamine, hyoscyamine and others like, benztropine mesylate, trihexyphenidyl HCl. Propantheline bromide is classified as an antispasmodic and anticholinergic drug. It is used to reduce spasms of the digestive system, and bladder associated with stomach ulcers and other digestive disorders.
Nutritional Considerations:
Atropine can lower the absorption of iron. (Brinker 1998)
Take with food to avoid GI problems (Pronsky 1999)
Propantheline increases riboflavin absorption. (McKevoy 1998)
Avoid alcohol. (Pronsky 1999)
Causes increased sun sensitivity use protection for prolonged exposure (Pronsky 1999)
Dry mouth, increased risk of dental problems (Pronsky 1999)
Herbal Considerations:
Acacia may interact with certain alkaloids such as atropine, hyoscamine and others to destroy them. (Leung 1996)
Anticholinergic side effects and adverse reactions may increase if henbane and thorn apple are used with anticholinergic drugs. (Blumenthal 1998)(Facts and Comparisons 1999)
Belladonna lowers the cathartic effect of May Apple. (Brinker 1998)
The blood pressure increase caused by Yohimbe can be reduced with Atropine. (Brinker 1998)
