Acetazolamide (Diamox)
Description:
Acetazolamide is a prescription drug used to treat glaucoma (see under glaucoma), and it has diuretic properties as well. It is used in the treatment of edema, epileptic seizures, and problems caused by high altitude such as fatigue, shortness of breath, and insomnia. Severe kidney, pulmonary or liver disease is a contraindication for using this drug. (Facts and Comparisons 1999)
Nutritional Considerations:
Electrolytes should be maintained and potassium supplementation may be needed. (Facts and Comparisons 1999) (Pronsky 1999)
Insure adequate fluids unless otherwise directed by a physician. (Pronsky 1999)
Herbal Considerations:
Avoid natural licorice products. (Pronsky 1999)
Natural sources of salicylates may evoke salicylate toxicity, which include: vomiting, tachycardia and hyperpnea. Acetazolamide toxicity can include: lethargy and somnolence. (Sweeney 1986)
Celery seed may theoretically interact with acetazolamide due to its diuretic properties. (Newall 1996)
