Description:
Anabolic steroids promote the formation of body tissues and are useful for weight recovery following a long illness, for example. They are related to the male hormone: testosterone.
There are many possible side effects of steroids, including poor wound healing and stomach irritation. Long-term use can lead to glaucoma, cataracts, diabetes, thin skin, and fragile bones. Any steroid can cause masculinization and high dosages can cause Cushing's syndrome.
Nutritional Considerations:
Nutritionally, they can produce a negative nitrogen balance, so that protein is lost and muscle tissues waste away. (Facts and Comparisons 2000)
There is also reduced calcium absorption, so that bones become soft and weak. Monitor calcium levels when on long term therapy. (Facts and Comparisons 2000)
Diabetics may need to monitor blood sugar closely when taking these drugs. (Facts and Comparisons 2000)
Sodium chloride, potassium phosphate and water retention may occur with use of these drugs. (Facts and Comparisons 2000)
