Description
Dolomite is a rock named for the French geologist, Dolomieu, consisting mainly of magnesium carbonate and calcium cabonate. It has gained popularity in recent years with the focus on osteoporosis as an available and natural, nutritional resource.
Method of Action
Dolomite forms the basis for a mineral supplement, providing magnesium, calcium and other trace minerals essential for healthy bones as well as numerous other cellular functions.
Therapeutic Approaches
Dolomite tends to be used primarily as a nutritional supplement, taken by women seeking a natural form of calcium in order to combat bone loss.
Toxicity Factors
“Natural” is not necessarily “pure”. Concern has arisen following the discovery of heavy metal contamination (e.g. lead) in some samples. While no evidence for in vivo toxicity has emerged, chronic use of these supplements may constitute unnecessary metal exposure.
