Weight-loss Program

Weight-loss Program

The study indicated that chromium picolinate, a natural dietary supplement, may accelerate the rate of body fat loss, maintain fat-free mass (lean tissue), and produce favorable changes in body composition. A four week diet, exercise and weight-loss program with chromium picolinate, inulin, capsicum, L-phenylalanine, and other lipotropic nutrients was implemented. Participants were assigned to either the supplement or placebo group. There were significant differences between the groups in which percent body fat, fat mass and fat-free mass was lowered in those who were supplemented. The results concluded that chromium picolinate may therefore be beneficial in weight-loss programs.

Corticosteroid-induced Diabetes

Corticosteroid-Induced Diabetes

This study demonstrated that corticosteroid treatment might increase chromium losses and that steroid-induced diabetes may be reversed by chromium supplementation. Following corticosteroid treatment, urinary chromium losses increased from 155+/-28 ng/d to 244+/-33 ng/d in the first 3 days. Patients with steroid-induced diabetes who were supplemented with chromium picolinate exhibited decreases in fasting blood glucose values from greater than 13.9 mmol/l to less than 8.3 mmol/l. Chromium losses may increase after corticosteroid treatment and corticosteroid-induced diabetics may be prevented by supplemental chromium.

Dysthymic Disorder and Chromium

Dysthymic Disorder

Preliminary studies indicate that chromium may be used as an antidepressant for dysthymic disorder. Dysthymic disorder is a relatively common illness that is frequently treated with antidepressants. A series of single-blind and open-label trials using chromium picolinate were implemented in treating antidepressant-refractory dysthymic disorder. As a result, chromium supplementation led to a remission of dysthymic symptoms. Other nutritional supplements were substituted for chromium in the single blind study, but the patients specifically responded to chromium. The authors recommend further controlled studies to validate their observations.

Glucose Homeostasis

Glucose Homeostasis

According to this study, chromium picolinate may have a role in glucose homeostasis. A case of a 28-year old woman with an 18-year history of type 1 diabetes mellitus was reported; her glycosylated hemoglobin (Hb Al c) decreased from 11.3% to 7.9% three months after first using 200 micrograms of chromium picolinate three times a day. The author recommends closer scrutiny of chromium picolinate in the treatment of diabetes through randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials.
