Colon crypts (Rats)
Colon crypts (Rats)
Precancerous pathological changes of colon were induced
Spirulina powder, germanium-132 and vitamin E all could inhibit the function of aberrant crypts of colon.
The number of aberrant crypts and aberrant crypts foci was significantly less in animals protected by spirulina than in positive controls (P < 0.01), but there was no significant difference between them during 21st- and 24th-week of injections.

Meal Replacement (Chicks)
Meal Replacement (Chicks)
1. The effect of sun-dried Spirulina platensis in poultry diets was studied in a 12-week feeding trial by replacing either fishmeal (FM) or groundnut cake (GC) in a commercial diet with algae at isonitrogenous concentrations of 140 g/kg and 170 g/kg respectively. Additional vitamins/minerals were omitted from the algal diets because Spirulina is rich in them. 2. Efficiency of food utilisation, protein efficiency ratio and dressing percentage indicated that substitution of FM or GC by alga did not affect the performance of broilers. 3. None of the diets affected the weights, compositions and histopathology of the various organs of the chicks. 4. Meat quality remained unchanged except for a more intense colour in the case of birds fed on the alga-containing diets.

Radiation sickness
Radiation sickness
Spirulina protects kidneys from mercury poisoning.
Studies showed that children living in highly radioactive areas had elevated IgE. This is the foundation for allergic reactions. IgE may be used as a clinical marker for high allergy sensitivity.
Spirulina dosage is 20 tablets (5 gms) per day which was reduced for the children (age 3-5) to 5 tablets twice a day; and for ages 5 -7, 7 tablets, twice a day.
Spirulina lowered the amounts of IgE in the blood which normlized the allergies.

General Resistance
General Resistance
Spirulina and Vitasil (autolysed baker's yeast) may be effective in increasing general resistance, according to this study conducted in rats with intestinal anaphylaxis and after external gamma-irradiation. The combination of spirulina and vitasil decreased the permeability of the intestinal barrier to macromolecules of polyethylene glycol 4000. Spirulina additive intake resulted in an almost complete normalization of permeability (1.84 times decrease) in anaphylactic rats.

Antioxidant & Spirulina
Antioxidant
According to this study, spirulina extract may provide some protection against free radical damage for both in vitro and in vivo systems. In both cases, spirulina significantly reduced oxidation by 50% in vitro, and by 17% in vivo. These antioxidant effects of spirulina may be due to the presence of phenolic acids, tocopherols, and beta-carotene --substances known to inhibit free radical oxidation.

Vascular Dilation
Vascular Dilation
Dietary spirulina may increase the vascular dilation response of aortic endothelium, according to this animal study. Researchers analyzed the effects of spirulina extract on rat aortic rings in vitro. Rings with endothelium exhibited less of a contractile response (to phenylephrine) and a concentration-dependent relaxation of pre-contracted rings when exposed to spirulina. The authors suggest that spirulina extract increases the synthesis/release of nitric oxide by the endothelium.
