Antihistamines

Astemizole (Hismanal)
Cetirizine (Zyrtec)
Clemastine (Tavist)
Diphenhydramine (Benadryl)
Fexofenidine (Allegra)
Hydroxyzine (Atarax)
Loratadine (Claritin)

Nutritional Considerations:

Take loratadine and astemizole on an empty stomach. (Pronsky 1999)

Avoid alcohol. (Pronsky 1999)

Patients should drink plenty of fluids unless otherwise directed (Pronsky 1999).

Herbal Considerations:

Given the drowsiness often associated with antihistamines, the addition of any herb with sedative action should be avoided. The following is a list of herbs with sedative action, which could increase the sedating action of some antihistamines: calamus, california poppy, celery, chamomile (German), couchgrass, elecampane, ginseng, goldenseal, hops, hydrocotyle, jamaica dogwood, kava root, motherwort, nettle, passionflower, sage, sassafras, skullcap, shepherd's purse, St. John's wort, valerian, wild carrot and wild lettuce. (Brinker 1998) (Newall 1996)
