Arthritis 101
(Or... In Case You Wonder Why Everything is a Pain...)
Arthritis literally translates to "inflammation of the joint". It is estimated that more than 50 million Americans suffer from some form of arthritis. The forms of arthritis that we most commonly think of when referring to arthritic symptoms are
osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout. However, we are not limited with those.
In addition to the above forms of arthritis, we can also include some conditions that are often difficult to diagnose, challenging to treat, and certainly no less debilitating. These conditions include fibromyalgia, lupus, Lyme disease, psoriatic arthritis, Reiter’s syndrome, Sjögren’s syndrome, and ankylosing spondylitis.
Because arthritis has commonly been thought to be incurable, the traditional medical response has only been to treat the symptoms, typically associated with pain. Too often, the treatment is a band-aid approach to mask the symptom. This approach for arthritis treatment can cause a whole different set of problems, from stomach distress to death (as evidenced by the controversy surrounding COX-2 inhibitor drugs). Fortunately,
there are healthy options.
Several natural materials have been well established to not only help reduce pain and inflammation associated with arthritis, but also help reestablish a health state in joints.
